All Keyed Up: Greek Key Pattern In Home Decor

The Greek Key pattern – also known as a Greek fret or meander design – is a classic border pattern constructed from a continuous line, shaped into a repeated motif which has stood the test of time from ancient Rome to now and beyond. Echoing the pattern of a labyrinth, the meander is considered to be among the most important symbols in Ancient Greece symbolizing infinity and unity. Often we will see this geometric pattern used in design as a border or edging but It can be beautifully dramatic super sized or repeated on a floor or as a wallpaper.

Symmetry can be so visually appealing. I love the variety of incarnations these designers have come up with using the key – from typical border on a curtain’s edge to shaping an entire hedge into a creation worthy of the Queen of Hearts’ garden in Alice In Wonderland. I wouldn’t necessarily try that one at home – although with winter finally admitting that the jig is up,  I am seriously looking forward to rolling up our sleeves and spending some time in the garden again.
