Patriot Games: Happy 4th of July From Anne Hepfer Designs!

We wait for summer for the better part of the year. We dream of it on gray winter days when the doc recommends raising the dose of vitamin D. We long for the smell of the grill and Coppertone, the feel of wind and heat, and the sound of waves lapping under the dock. As a child, I spent summers with my family on Nantucket Island. Clambakes and blueberry tarts, riding bikes on cobblestone streets and running on the beach with my brother Will, trying desperately to get our kites to fly high into the eye of the sun. While time has faded the memories a little, that feeling of freedom remains sharp and true. I became a Canadian citizen in 2012, one of the most exciting moments in my life.

A proud dual citizen of two great countries, I love that the Fourth of July traditions commingle in our family with Canada Day celebrations, sunsets enjoyed with friends and family, bonfires and s’mores, boat rides and fireworks! On both sides of the border, we declare our patriotism and pay tribute to our many freedoms. My roots may lie south, but my life and family thrive here in Toronto, and I couldn’t be more proud. Whichever combination of red and white (and blue) you celebrate this week, I hope that your summer kick-off enjoys many great memories for you and your family.
