First Impressions: Foyer Style

We all know that we’re not meant to judge a book by it’s cover but I do think there’s an exception to this statement when it comes to your home. The entrance into your dwelling is the first glimpse that visitors have into your private life. And that other saying, about never getting a second chance to make a first impression? I think that one does have bearing. So make your entry important, not just a thruway in your everyday. Just as much for people visiting your home but more importantly, to send your family out into their day – and to welcome them home in the evening.

Have a lovely long weekend – it’s been worth the wait, hasn’t it?

Butterflies!

A recent sale notification from Sotheby’s featuring a beautifully crafted silver butterfly box by Ivan Semenovich Gubkin (1854) reminded me how drawn I am to the butterfly as a motif in design. As a child I was fascinated by how the seemingly fragile Monarch butterfly could survive migrating all the way to Mexico. The Butterfly Conservatory at The American Museum of Natural History in New York is a must – especially if you have the kids with you. Take a look at some wild “flutter-by” inspired creations!

Tortoise Shell

Tortoise shell has such a luxurious look and feel. Produced mainly from the shell of the hawksbill turtle, it was widely used to produce such items as combs, jewellery, sunglasses and guitar picks. Not only is it lovely to look at but it is also quite durable. In the 1970′s the hawksbill turtle was declared an endangered species and the trade of tortoiseshell worldwide was banned under CITES. (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). While it is possible to acquire gorgeous antique pieces – for example boxes, trays, mirrors and furnishings – we can also still enjoy the look of tortoise shell in faux wall coverings and glass ware too. Authentic or faux, tortoise shell accents lend a rich quality to any room, both classic and contemporary. I love the creative incarnations captured in this collection of photos.

It never fails – no matter how spacious or how intimate, everyone likes to be in the kitchen. It has always been considered the heart of any home and it’s easy to see why when you look at these gorgeous spaces. Great lighting, clean lines, smart storage, ease of flow and uncluttered counters are all the hallmarks of a well-done kitchen. It can inspire more envy than any other room in the house when you see one to which your own doesn’t measure up. I can picture myself siting quite happily in any of these, poring over menus or sharing a meal with family and friends. Can’t you?

Interior Design Spotlight: Warren Platner (1919 – 2006)

Iconic American designer Warren Platner is a personal inspiration. A contemporary of legendary designers Raymond Loewy, Eero Saarinen and I. M. Pei, he is well-known for his steel wire furniture, of which he developed both the method and tooling to produce the famous wire chair in an enduring furniture collection. Platner was a fixture of 1960′s Modernism. His work lives on in his numerous prominent residential and commercial projects, among them the Georg Jensen Design Center and offices for the Ford Foundation in NYC and Water Tower Place in Chicago.

As described in his obituary in the New York Times, “Mr. Platner created [office] spaces that were flexible, understated and efficient. He chose a rich, quiet colour scheme to create a warm environment and installed custom-made furniture designed to eliminate unnecessary effort.” Regrettably one of his best known projects, and one that I feel fortunate to have visited, the Windows On The World restaurant in the World Trade Center, is lost to us but for now haunting images. Take a look around some of my favourite examples of the Platner aesthetic.
